CM Sukhu on Friday announced that the Himachal Pradesh Government will develop disaster-resilient infrastructure worth Rs. 3,500 crore to strengthen the state’s preparedness against natural disasters and reduce future losses.

Speaking at the valedictory session of the “Towards Resilience Infrastructure Planning in the Western Himalaya” workshop at HIPA, Shimla, he said the state’s mountainous terrain has made it increasingly vulnerable to disasters.

Referring to the 2023 disaster, the Chief Minister said nearly 75,000 tourists were safely evacuated through coordinated efforts, while around 23,000 houses were destroyed and 51 people lost their lives. He said the government raised compensation for fully damaged houses from Rs. 1.30 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh, adding that lessons from 2023 helped improve the response during the 2025 disaster.

Sukhu attributed the rise in cloudburst incidents to climate change and stressed the need for policy reforms and disaster-resilient development. He also released the report “Towards Resilient Himachal Pradesh” and launched the Himachal Social Impact Assessment Management System (SIAU Portal) to strengthen data-driven governance and inter-departmental coordination.

He said the government is committed to building resilient infrastructure and ensuring sustainable development across the state.
