Demonstrations at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) intensified as the Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) extended its “Save University Campaign” into its 13th consecutive day. Faculty members staged a mass demonstration outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office, voicing strong opposition against proposed administrative reforms that they argue undermine institutional dignity and decision-making independence.
The protest centres on preserving the 56-year-old institution’s democratic framework and statutory bodies, including the Academic and Executive Councils. Association leaders clarified that while faculty members support administrative transparency, external oversight must not be used to weaken academic freedom or override established university protocols.
Speaking at the gathering, representatives emphasized that HPU’s legacy was built over decades through continuous research and academic effort. The association urged authorities to redirect their focus toward strengthening university infrastructure, modernizing laboratories, and resolving resource deficits rather than curtailing statutory independence. Faculty leaders reaffirmed that the ongoing campaign will proceed through peaceful, democratic means until the institution’s autonomous character is safeguarded.
