Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday said the government is working to introduce criminal provisions against those involved in trafficking and administering banned substances, as part of efforts to strengthen India’s anti-doping framework.
Speaking at the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Global Anti-Doping Intelligence & Investigations Network conference in New Delhi, the Minister stressed that doping has evolved into an organised multinational activity, requiring stronger global cooperation and enforcement.
He highlighted that India has already strengthened its legal framework through the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 and its 2025 amendment, aligning regulations with international standards.
Dr. Mandaviya said the country is adopting a multi-pronged approach combining legal reforms, education, and technology to promote clean sport. Initiatives include awareness programmes by the National Anti-Doping Agency, digital tools like the “Know Your Medicine” app, and expanded testing infrastructure.
He noted that anti-doping testing in India has nearly doubled in recent years, while violations have significantly declined, reflecting the impact of sustained awareness efforts.
Emphasising the importance of ethics in sports, the Minister said India remains committed to ensuring fairness, integrity, and transparency, while also strengthening global partnerships to tackle doping networks effectively.
