The Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics & IT, Jitin Prasada, dedicated the new Aadhaar App to the nation, marking a major milestone in India’s digital identity ecosystem. Developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the app provides Aadhaar holders with a secure, convenient, and privacy-first way to carry, share, and verify their digital identity.
Prasada praised UIDAI for its work and emphasized that Aadhaar continues to be a showcase of digital governance, making service delivery seamless and hassle-free. He noted that the new app would further accelerate these efforts, keeping citizens at the center of innovation.
S Krishan, Secretary of MeitY, highlighted that the app promotes data minimization, enhanced security, and selective sharing. Users can now control which personal details to share for specific services, putting consent firmly in the hands of residents.
The app is designed for ease of use across a wide range of real-life scenarios. These include hotel check-ins through QR code scanning, optional face verification, age verification for cinema tickets, hospital admissions for visitors and attendants, and verification of gig workers and service partners.
Advanced features include face verification for proof of presence, one-click biometric lock/unlock, authentication history viewing, and a QR-based contact card for easy sharing of contact information. Residents can manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, enabling the “One Family – One App” concept. Users can also update their registered mobile numbers and addresses directly through the app, with more services planned for the future.
Neelkanth Mishra, UIDAI Chairman, noted that this shift from paper to paperless identity is a major step forward, with UIDAI continuing to focus on citizens in all innovations. Bhuvnesh Kumar, UIDAI CEO, explained that selective credential sharing ensures Aadhaar numbers are not stored by verifiers. Only digitally signed, verifiable credentials are shared, in line with the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.
The launch of the new Aadhaar App reaffirms India’s commitment to resident-centric, inclusive, and trusted digital infrastructure, enabling citizens to show, share, and verify their identity with convenience and security.
