Under the Anti-Chitta campaign launched by CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Himachal Pradesh Police has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking across the state to move towards the goal of making Himachal Pradesh a “Chitta-Free State”.
A police spokesperson informed that as part of the second phase of the campaign, a special 24-hour inter-state and inter-district naka (checking) drive was conducted across the state on March 9, 2026. The coordinated operation was carried out based on intelligence inputs and close inter-district coordination, with the primary objective of dismantling drug trafficking networks and curbing narcotics-related activities.
During the drive, District Police units, the Special Task Force and police battalions jointly set up nakas at 176 identified locations across the state. A total of 20,230 vehicles were checked during the operation to maintain strict surveillance.
As a result of the intensive checks, five cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and eight accused persons were arrested. Police also recovered 1.221 kilograms of charas and 7 grams of chitta (heroin) during the operation.
Apart from drug-related enforcement, strict action was also taken against traffic violations. 866 challans were issued under the Motor Vehicles Act, while 12 challans were issued under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). In addition, blood and urine samples of 21 suspected individuals were collected following legal procedures to aid scientific investigation.
The spokesperson stated that the campaign aims to protect youth from falling into drug addiction and to dismantle group-based drug activities emerging in secluded areas that often lure young people.
He appealed to citizens, particularly the youth, to actively support the Anti-Chitta movement and report any information related to drug trafficking by calling 112 or informing the nearest police station, assuring that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential.
