Himachal Pradesh Congress leaders Chaudhary Chander Kumar (Agriculture Minister) and Rohit Thakur (Education Minister) criticized the Leader of the Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, urging him to clarify the BJP’s position on the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG) instead of misleading the public. They emphasized that under Article 275(1) of the Constitution, RDG is a constitutional right, and its discontinuation could cost the state nearly Rs. 10,000 crore annually.
The ministers clarified that Externally Aided Projects (EAPs) cited by Thakur are loans, not grants. In contrast, RDG is a grant and a rightful entitlement of the state. They accused the BJP of playing politics over Himachal’s interests, noting that the people are now aware of the party’s inconsistent stance.
Highlighting the recent meeting with the Union Finance Minister, the Congress leaders said Thakur failed to effectively represent Himachal’s interests or secure assurances on RDG restoration. They also pointed out that no BJP leader has openly supported restoring the grant, despite Thakur previously emphasizing its necessity before the 15th and 16th Finance Commissions.
Chaudhary Chander Kumar and Rohit Thakur concluded that Congress will continue to strongly defend Himachal Pradesh’s rights on every platform, vowing not to compromise on the state’s financial entitlements.
