The Department of Science and Technology (DST), alongside its Autonomous Institutions and Survey of India offices nationwide, actively observed the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2026’ campaign, which launched on September 17, 2026. The initiative focused on promoting environmental hygiene, sustainability, waste management, and honoring sanitation workers.
DST Secretary Prof. Umesh V. Waghmare led the drive, beginning with the Swachhata Pledge on September 18 and heading hands-on Shramdaan (voluntary labor) drives at Technology Bhawan and Vigyan Sadan, including a major cleanup on Gandhi Jayanti. Beyond physical drives, the campaign featured green initiatives such as a tree plantation drive and creative awareness events, including a “Kabaad Se Kala” Rangoli contest and an employee essay competition.
In line with the Safai Mitra Suraksha initiative, the DST emphasized the health, dignity, and financial security of its sanitation personnel. The department felicitated 110 Safai Mitras, hosted a dedicated health check-up camp, and partnered with SEBI to conduct financial literacy sessions for staff. Coordinated by Joint Secretary Mrs. A. Dhanalakshmi, the multi-faceted campaign reinforced cleanliness as a long-term civic duty rather than a temporary program.
