In a major boost to the preservation and promotion of Himachal Pradesh’s traditional heritage, three iconic products of the state — Himachal Ransingha, Himachal Wood Carving Craft, and Himachal Handmade Galecha — have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status.

The recognition has been facilitated by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Himachal Pradesh Regional Office (HPRO), in collaboration with local artisan groups, producer collectives, and other stakeholders. The GI registration aims to safeguard the unique identity of these traditional products while enhancing their market value and visibility.

The Himachal Ransingha, a traditional wind instrument, has long been an integral part of the state’s cultural, religious, and ceremonial traditions. The Himachal Wood Carving Craft reflects centuries-old artistic excellence through intricate motifs and skilled craftsmanship, while the Himachal Handmade Galecha represents the region’s rich handwoven textile heritage and continues to support the livelihoods of numerous artisan families.

The GI tag is expected to protect these products from imitation and misuse, strengthen their branding, and improve access to wider markets. The recognition will also help ensure that the benefits of growing consumer awareness reach the artisan communities responsible for preserving these traditions.

NABARD supported the registration process through stakeholder mobilisation, documentation of traditional knowledge and production techniques, coordination with relevant agencies, and technical facilitation required for obtaining GI status.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vivek Pathania, Chief General Manager, NABARD Himachal Pradesh Regional Office, said that the GI recognition marks a significant step towards preserving the state’s cultural identity while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for traditional artisans. He reaffirmed NABARD’s commitment to supporting producer groups and artisan communities through branding, market linkages, value-chain development, capacity building, and post-registration assistance.

Dr. Pathania also acknowledged the contributions of Kushal Deep, Deputy General Manager, and Himanshu Baliyan, Assistant Manager, NABARD HPRO, for their key role in facilitating the registration process through effective coordination and stakeholder engagement.

With this achievement, Himachal Pradesh’s traditional crafts and heritage products are expected to gain greater recognition at national and international levels. NABARD HPRO plans to continue working with stakeholders on awareness generation, authorised-user registration, branding, packaging, skill development, and market promotion of GI-tagged products.
