International Whale Shark Day, observed annually on August 30, is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the world’s largest fish (Rhincodon typus) and advocating for the protection of its ocean habitats. First established in 2008 at the International Whale Shark Conference in Isla Holbox, Mexico, the day highlights the critical conservation status of these gentle filter-feeders, which are currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Despite their massive size—reaching lengths of up to 18 meters—whale sharks are harmless creatures that feed primarily on plankton and small marine organisms, recognized individually by their unique pattern of white spots. The observance aims to educate the public, curb threats such as illegal poaching, plastic pollution, and vessel strikes, and promote sustainable eco-tourism alongside protected marine corridors worldwide.
