An interactive session between Himachal Pradesh Police and the elected representatives of Municipal Corporation Shimla was held at the Police Headquarters in Shimla to strengthen coordination on civic safety and law-and-order issues in the city.
The meeting, chaired by the Director General of Police, was attended by the Mayor and councillors of MC Shimla along with senior officers of the state and Shimla police. The interaction was organised following the directions of Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
Welcoming the representatives, the DGP described the meeting as a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at building stronger cooperation between the Municipal Corporation and the police administration. He emphasized that councillors, being the closest elected representatives to citizens at the ward level, play a vital role in conveying public concerns related to traffic, safety, illegal activities and other local issues.
During the session, officials also highlighted the functioning of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), noting that Himachal Pradesh Police has significantly improved its national ranking—from 34th place a few months ago to first position in the country—due to improved coordination and faster response mechanisms.
Participants discussed key issues including traffic management, public safety and the growing concern of drug abuse, particularly the menace of “chitta”. The DGP stressed that tackling drug abuse requires collective efforts involving law enforcement, local representatives, civil society and citizens.
The Mayor and councillors welcomed the initiative and shared suggestions regarding safety, traffic regulation and community policing across different wards of the city. Councillors also highlighted drug hotspots and urged the police to intensify day and night patrolling, especially around schools, colleges and other sensitive areas.
Assuring full cooperation, the DGP stated that the police department will take appropriate action and continue working closely with the Municipal Corporation to curb drug abuse and strengthen public safety in Shimla.
Officials described the meeting as the beginning of sustained engagement between the police and local representatives to ensure that Shimla remains a safe and citizen-friendly city.
