During a performance of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, a theatrical cannon was fired and accidentally ignited the thatched roof of the Globe Theatre. The building was destroyed by fire within an hour, though there were no reported fatalities.

Adolf Hitler carried out the Night of the Long Knives, a violent purge in Nazi Germany in which the leadership of the SA (including Ernst Röhm) and other political opponents were executed to consolidate his power.

Brazil defeated Sweden 5–2 in the FIFA World Cup Final to win their first World Cup title. A 17-year-old Pelé scored twice, becoming the youngest player to score in a World Cup final.
