SJVN has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Chhattisgarh and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) for the development of the 1800 MW Kotpali Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Chhattisgarh.
The MoU was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai. Signatories included Sushil Kumar Sharma, Director (Projects) of SJVN, Subodh Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary of the Energy Department of Chhattisgarh, and Sanjeev Kumar Katiyar, Managing Director of CSPGCL. Senior officials from SJVN and the Government of Chhattisgarh also attended the ceremony.
Located in Balrampur District, Chhattisgarh, the Kotpali PSP is an off-stream, closed-loop pumped storage project with an installed capacity of 1800 MW. The project is expected to generate around 3967 million units of electricity annually. Once operational, it will play a crucial role in supporting India’s energy transition goals while ensuring a stable and resilient power supply.
The project requires an investment of ₹9500 crore and is projected to create approximately 5000 direct and indirect employment opportunities during its construction and development phases. In addition to strengthening Chhattisgarh’s renewable energy infrastructure, the project will stimulate economic growth, attract investments, and generate job opportunities in the region.
Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) are essential for integrating renewable energy into the grid. With the increasing share of solar and wind energy, PSPs help maintain grid stability by storing surplus power during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak demand periods.
This MoU highlights SJVN’s dedication to expanding its renewable energy portfolio and contributing significantly to India’s mission of achieving net-zero emissions and energy sustainability.
