The Bantony Castle, originally the summer palace of the Maharaja of Sirmaur, has a rich history dating back over 140 years. Constructed in 1880, the main building of the castle showcases a unique blend of architectural styles, combining elements of the mock Tudor Style, chalet, and mini towers. Designed by TEG Cooper under the supervision of Raja Surender Bikram Prakash, the castle was built on the site where a cottage belonging to Captain A. Gordon once stood, serving as accommodation for army officers.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri inaugurated the Light and Sound Show at Bantony Castle in Shimla. On this occasion, the Deputy Chief Minister and other dignitaries witnessed the spectacular show. He stated that this endeavour in Shimla is a unique initiative that should be experienced not only by the people of Shimla but also by tourists. He emphasized that Bantony Castle, along with the city of Shimla, has its own history, which is portrayed in the Light and Sound Show. A special screening was held for mediapersons here today.

He further mentioned that in the future, other tourist destinations in the state will also be developed from a tourism perspective. The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted that Bantony Castle is a significant asset for the Department of Language, Art, and Culture. Which has been restored, and other activities will be initiated here to promote tourism. He expressed his belief that with the commencement of all these activities, the place will emerge as an attractive tourist destination.

Military Use and Transition of Ownership

During both World Wars, the rulers of Sirmaur permitted the colonial Government to utilize the Bantony Castle for military purposes. In the Second World War, it housed the Prisoner of War section associated with All India Radio, managing communications primarily for Italian prisoners interned at Yol, near Dharamshala. After India gained independence, the esteemed newspaper “The Tribune,” previously based in Lahore, operated from the castle before relocating to Chandigarh. Prior to independence, Bantony Castle came under the possession of the Maharaja of Darbhanga. In 1957-58, Maharaja Sir Kameshwar Singh of Darbhanga rented the property to the Punjab Government, which later accommodated various wings of the Punjab and Himachal Police. The Police Officers’ mess was also situated within the premises.

Restoration and Acquisition by the Himachal Government

In 1968, while still under police ownership, the Bantony estate was purchased by the prominent local business family of Ram Krishan and sons. However, in 2017, the Himachal Pradesh Government acquired the 19,000 square meter estate and its structures. The government undertook a comprehensive restoration project, investing approximately Rs. 29 Crore to revive the historical site. The restoration aimed to transform Bantony Castle into an elaborate complex that would house a proposed Heritage Museum, Multipurpose Hall, and Art and Craft exhibitions, along with a captivating Light and Sound Show.

The Bantony Castle Complex:

Heritage Museum and Multipurpose Hall Following the restoration, the Bantony Castle complex now encompasses an area of about 3700 square meters. It features a Heritage Museum, which showcases the rich cultural heritage and history of the region. Additionally, a spacious Multipurpose Hall has been created to host various events, exhibitions, and cultural programs, contributing to the promotion of local arts and crafts.

Digital Museum:

Immersive Experience in the Main Building Within the main building of Bantony Castle, a digital museum is set to open soon. This innovative museum aims to provide visitors with an immersive and interactive experience. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, the digital museum will present the history and cultural significance of Shimla and the surrounding region. Through engaging displays and multimedia presentations, visitors will have the opportunity to delve into the captivating past of this historical town.

Mesmerizing Light and Sound Show:

Shimla’s History Unveiled A highlight of the Bantony Castle complex is the mesmerizing Light and Sound Show. A first-of-its-kind production in Shimla. Using cutting-edge digital art technology. The show vividly portrays the history of Shimla, starting from its foundation at the historical site of Bantony Castle. With captivating visuals and sound effects, the show takes spectators on a journey through time, recounting the city’s evolution up to the modern day. Renowned Bollywood actor Anupam Kher lends his voice to narrate the show, adding depth and authenticity to the storytelling. The Light and Sound Show is available in both English and Hindi versions, accommodating up to 70 spectators per viewing.
