Nand Lal Sharma, Chairman of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), proudly announced a momentous milestone in power generation on July 24, 2023. BBMB achieved an unprecedented feat by generating a remarkable 615.14 Lakh Units of electricity in a single day, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to meeting the energy demands of BBMB partner states. This new record surpassed the previous highest daily power generation of 604.24 Lakh Units achieved on August 21, 2008. Additionally, on July 22, 2023, BBMB achieved a maximum peak power generation of 2733 MW, playing a vital role in supporting the Grid.

During heavy torrential rains in the region from July 8, 2023, to July 11, 2023, BBMB effectively absorbed the entire floodwater from rivers Satluj and Beas in its Bhakra and Pong Dams, respectively. The volume of water absorbed was truly staggering, with Bhakra Dam holding 4,45,037 cusec days (1088 Million Cubic Meters) and Pong Dam absorbing about 6,25,554 cusec days (1530 Million Cubic Meters) of water in just four days. Notably, during July 2023 until July 24, BBMB received an impressive 3590 Million Cubic Meters of water in its Pong Dam, exceeding the long-term average inflow of 1610 Million Cubic Meters for the same period. Similarly, in Bhakra Dam, a substantial 3920 Million Cubic Meters of water was received, surpassing the long-term average of 2940 Million Cubic Meters for the specified period. BBMB’s efficient water management significantly reduced the impact of floods in Punjab and Haryana.

With the receding of floodwaters in downstream areas, BBMB commenced controlled discharge from its dams, resulting in a record-breaking electricity production. It is noteworthy that the power generated by BBMB is supplied to partner states without any cost, while the Operation & Maintenance expenses of dams and powerhouses are borne by the partner states as per actual usage. On a notional basis, the cost of power generated by BBMB during the year 2022-23 was an impressively low 58.3 paisa/Unit, making it one of the most cost-effective sources of power in the country.

The Chairman of BBMB expressed delight at this momentous achievement, attributing it to the dedication and hard work of the entire BBMB team. He assured the public that BBMB remains committed to the sustainable management of reservoirs, with a focus on flood control and efficient power generation for the well-being of the people. The organization is determined to optimize operations, improve infrastructure, and meet the growing energy needs of the nation. As electricity demand continues to rise, BBMB will leverage its expertise, technology, and workforce to set more such records in the future while ensuring sustainable growth and development.
