The Catholic Association of the Archdiocese of Delhi (CAAD) strongly condemns the recent decision by the Delhi Police to deny permission for the Annual Way of the Cross procession, scheduled for 13 April 2025. This decision has caused deep anguish and disappointment within the Christian community of Delhi.

A peaceful religious tradition disrupted

The Way of the Cross is a spiritually significant and peaceful event held every Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week leading up to Easter. For many years, this solemn procession has taken place from St. Mary’s Church, Old Delhi to Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gole Dak Khana, reenacting the 14 Stations of the Cross. It draws participation from thousands of faithful who walk in silence and prayer, commemorating the Passion of Jesus Christ.

The denial of permission this year is deeply shocking, especially given the long history of this event being conducted in full cooperation with authorities, without a single instance of disruption to traffic or public order.

Concerns over discrimination and religious freedom

CAAD has raised serious concerns about the justification provided by the authorities — law and order and traffic concerns on a Sunday — which appear unconvincing. Christians in Delhi are questioning why other religious and political groups continue to receive permission for public processions and rallies, even on working days, while a peaceful Christian gathering is being denied.

This move raises important questions about the equal application of constitutional rights, particularly the freedom of religion, peaceful assembly, and the right to expression — rights guaranteed to every Indian citizen.

A call for justice and equal treatment

The Annual Way of the Cross has always stood as a symbol of peace, devotion, and discipline. CAAD urges the Delhi Police and concerned authorities to reconsider their decision and ensure that all religious communities are treated with fairness, respect, and equality.

The Christian community in Delhi — and across India — has always lived as a peaceful, law-abiding group that contributes positively to society. Denying such a meaningful event risks creating a sense of alienation and exclusion among minorities and weakens the secular values that our nation upholds.

CAAD’s continued commitment to harmony and civic dialogue

The Catholic Association of the Archdiocese of Delhi is a registered body representing the Catholic faithful in the national capital. CAAD remains firmly committed to fostering harmony, mutual respect, and open dialogue between the Church, civil society, and government institutions.

We believe in the shared values of peace, inclusivity, and service to the nation. Through collaboration with all stakeholders, CAAD aims to promote understanding, uphold human dignity, and contribute positively to the moral and social fabric of our country.
