The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has strongly condemned the recent attacks on journalists covering the current general elections. The DUJ expresses deep regret over the misbehavior of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists towards Times Now reporter Akanksha Khajuria and cameraperson Radhakrishna. The journalists reported being assaulted and having their camera broken at the AAP office in Delhi, leading to a police complaint.

The DUJ advises journalists to exercise caution while covering elections and to maintain a neutral stance to avoid violence. It acknowledges the unfortunate reality that sections of the media often reflect the political biases of their corporate owners, leading to conflicts between journalists and political entities. This tension is evident in recent incidents at various citizen protests, such as the farmers’ agitations.

Rising Violence Against Journalists

Several journalists have faced violence during the election period. On May 12, YouTube journalist Raghav Trivedi was beaten while covering Amit Shah’s rally in Rae Bareli. The DUJ urges the police to protect journalists at such events to ensure their safety.

Tragically, on May 13, Ashutosh Srivastava, a journalist for multiple channels, was shot dead in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. The attack was allegedly due to his exposure of cow smugglers.

Police Action Against Journalists

The DUJ highlights that even routine coverage can attract trouble. Recently, Uttarakhand police filed a case against Dainik Bhaskar journalist Manmeet Rawat for reporting on the pilgrim rush to Chardham, which led to deaths. Additionally, Gajendra Rawat and Ganesh Panwar faced prosecution for a Facebook post about the alleged theft of a gold plate from Kedarnath Temple. In March, Ashutosh Negi, who campaigned for justice in the Ankita Bhandari murder case, was arrested. The DUJ strongly objects to these police actions and demands the immediate withdrawal of these cases.
