CM Sukhu on Thursday launched the first phase of a Chinar plantation drive from his official residence, Oak Over, to mark World Environment Day. The initiative aims to increase green cover and strengthen public awareness about environmental conservation.

The Chief Minister said the Chinar tree, known for its ecological importance, dense shade and majestic appearance, is well suited to Shimla’s climatic conditions and will contribute to the city’s green landscape.

On the occasion, he also released four publications focused on forestry, environmental management and eco-tourism. These included Van Bodh, a handbook for frontline forest staff; Environmental Management and Regulations by Head of Forest Force Dr. Sanjay Sood; a publication on forestry projects supported under JICA, KfW and IDP initiatives; and a coffee table book showcasing 75 eco-tourism sites across Himachal Pradesh.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the publications would serve as useful reference material for forest officials, researchers and policymakers, while promoting greater awareness about forest conservation, biodiversity and sustainable tourism.

Emphasising the role of youth in environmental protection, he urged the younger generation to take an active part in preserving natural resources and building a greener future. As part of the celebrations, he also distributed saplings to students of GSSS Portmore and ‘Children of the State’.
