Game-Changing Strategies For Electric Vehicle Evolution In India: DST

Experts across different areas connected to Electric Vehicles (EV) sector highlighted the need for synergy between the industry and academia to facilitate innovation and sustainable solutions in the EV, at a workshop organised on the sidelines of the National Science Day Celebrations.  

Dr V K Saraswat, Member Niti Aayog emphasised on the importance of strengthening the public EV infrastructure across the Nation. “The guidelines and standards involve installation of EV charging stations in which the oil companies can play a key role. Success of EV mobility will need innovations, technologies, public private partnership, and policy decision.

EVs can go a long way to help us make India’s net zero target a reality and help in development of new business,” he said at the workshop organised to get directions for initiating a new program to support, research and innovations in e-Mobility.

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary Department of Science and Technology said that DST has led pioneering efforts in comprehensively analysing the pathways to decarbonise road transportation sector. A massive exercise was undertaken through wide ranging consultations with 100+ stakeholders in preparation of a report on Electric Vehicles. The report focusses on Battery Tech, Power Electronics and Charging infrastructure.

Prof. Karandikar added that the key challenges like transportation of raw materials, design efficiency, price point and lifespan, need attention. “The synergy between industry and academia is crucial in overcoming obstacles, facilitating innovation, and bringing sustainable solutions in the EV sector. This collaborative effort can lead to advancements that benefit both stakeholders and pave the way for a more efficient and widespread adoption of electric vehicles,” he pointed out.

A report on EV Evolution: Catalysing Technology Led Ecosystem for Bharat e-Mobility was released by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh during National Science Day Celebration at Vigyan Bhavan on 28 February 2024. Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser, DST emphasised that the report focuses on identifying solutions, developing infrastructure, and transforming the entire EV ecosystem.

Dr. Anita Gupta, Head, Climate, Energy and Sustainable Technology (CEST) Division, DST, said that electric vehicles (EVs) is a significant contributor to both economic growth and environmental sustainability. She emphasized the need for concerted efforts from academia, startups, and stakeholders to drive this transition effectively.

Prof. BG Fernandes from IIT Bombay briefed about the report on EV Evolution: Catalysing Technology Led Ecosystem for Bharat e-Mobility and said that DST has carried out extensive consultation at various levels to create the report and it has proposed specific recommendations for translation of R&D.

The full day workshop ‘Evolution Catalysing Technology-Led Ecosystem for e-Mobility’ on the sidelines of the National Science Day Celebrations was organised at Vigyan Bhavan with a view to get directions for initiating a new and exclusive program to support, research and innovations in e-Mobility in the country.
