CM Sukhu today assured a delegation from the Seb Utpadak Sangh (Apple Growers’ Association), led by former MLA Rakesh Singha, that their demands would be taken up sympathetically and raised with the Central Government. He emphasized that the state government stands firmly with the interests of farmers and apple cultivators.
Reaffirming the government’s proactive stance, CM Sukhu stated that the State has already moved the Supreme Court to seek relief for affected growers. He assured that no tree felling would be permitted following the Apex Court’s stay order and directed the Forest Department to investigate reported violations in the Karsog and Kullu regions.
The Chief Minister also committed to discussing the matter with the Union Minister for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. He said the State would work in consultation with all stakeholders to frame a comprehensive policy that safeguards the interests of the apple-growing community.
Addressing broader concerns, CM Sukhu highlighted that the State has urged the Union Government to allow the allocation of 1–5 bighas of land for the rehabilitation of disaster-affected families, many of whom have lost their land. He called for the relaxation of forest norms, noting that 68% of the state falls under forest cover, which often complicates rehabilitation efforts. BJP MPs from Himachal have also been asked to push for these demands at the central level.
Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi extended full support to the growers, assuring that every possible effort would be made to provide relief. He also suggested exploring options under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, similar to provisions extended to Pong Dam oustees.
The meeting was also attended by former Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan and CPM leader Dr. Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, who lent their support to the demands raised by the Seb Utpadak Sangh.
