Himachal Braces for More Snow as Lahaul-Spiti Faces Disruption

Lahaul-Spiti district is grappling with heavy snowfall in its higher reaches, triggering avalanches and landslides that have disrupted normal life and blocked 104 roads across the region. Key routes, including Darcha to Shinkula Top and Gramphu–Batal, remain closed, while only partial clearance has been achieved on some stretches.

The district administration has issued an avalanche advisory for vulnerable areas, urging residents and travelers to avoid non-essential movement in high-altitude zones. Authorities have cautioned that rising temperatures along with accumulated snow could further increase the risk of avalanches and landslides, particularly above 2,700 metres.

After two days of relatively clear weather, Himachal Pradesh is set to experience renewed rainfall and snowfall. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has forecast light rain across several districts from March 23, with snow expected in higher elevations. A yellow alert has also been issued for gusty winds of 30–40 kmph in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi.

The current weather pattern is influenced by a western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Afghanistan, with another system expected to affect northwest India from March 26.

Temperature readings across the state showed Shimla at 8.2°C, Bhuntar airport in Kullu at 9.6°C, Dharamshala at 8.9°C, and Una at 12.4°C. Mandi recorded 12.3°C, Solan 10°C, and Nahan 9.5°C. In tribal areas, Kalpa was at 2.6°C, while Tabo remained the coldest at −0.4°C. Tourist spots saw Manali at 6.2°C, Kufri at 5.4°C, and Palampur at 10°C.

Sunday saw mostly clear skies, though clouds increased in the afternoon, causing a slight dip in temperatures. Minimum temperatures remained largely stable, while maximum temperatures rose in most areas. Light rainfall was recorded in Manali, and intermittent wet spells are expected until March 28, with brief dry intervals on March 24 and 25 before weather activity intensifies again.
