The monthly meeting of the Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society was held today under the chairmanship of Project Director Rajiv Kumar. The key agenda of the meeting focused on the rising cases of injecting drug use in the state and the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in addressing this issue.
Addressing the Injecting Drug Use Crisis

Project Director Rajiv Kumar emphasized the need for a structured approach to combat drug addiction, suggesting that injecting drug users (IDUs) be regularly referred to psychiatric departments across all districts. He highlighted that:
- Every district in Himachal Pradesh has a psychiatric department where young addicts can receive treatment.
- Regular check-ups, counseling, and therapy have shown significant success in addiction recovery.
- Psychological counseling plays a crucial role in reshaping the mindset of IDUs, reducing drug dependency, and boosting self-confidence.
NGOs & Psychiatric Departments to Work Together
Rajiv Kumar stressed the importance of collaboration between NGOs and psychiatric departments to help drug users reintegrate into society. He issued the following directives:
- NGOs must ensure that at least five injecting drug users are referred to psychiatric care every week.
- NGO staff must accompany patients to medical facilities and ensure regular health monitoring.
- Strengthening coordination between NGOs and healthcare institutions will be vital in achieving long-term rehabilitation.

The Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society remains committed to curbing drug abuse and promoting better rehabilitation measures. With stronger coordination between NGOs and psychiatric departments, the state aims to help individuals recover and reintegrate into normal life.
