Himachal Pradesh University has approved a three per cent increase in college and university fees, effective from the next academic session. The decision was taken at an Executive Council meeting at the Summer Hill campus, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Dr Mahavir Singh.

The hike comes amid financial pressures, with the grant-in-aid expected to drop by nearly five per cent, leaving the university with Rs 41 crore against an annual expenditure of Rs 95 crore. Earlier, a 40 per cent hike was proposed, but student objections led the council to approve a minimal three per cent increase.

The university is also awaiting pending funds under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha AbhiyanPradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, with nearly half of the sanctioned Rs 90 crore yet to be released. The council additionally approved filling seven vacant Assistant Professor posts. This is the first fee revision in 13 years.
