KAASH Foundation, Mumbai, organised its first-ever Free Medical and Awareness Camp at Juma Masjid, targeting the Kashmiri Khan labour community of Shimla.

The Kashmiri Khans, known for manually carrying heavy loads across the town, often remain marginalised and lack access to basic healthcare services. The camp aimed to address their pressing medical concerns through direct interaction and consultation.

Health experts at the camp highlighted that members of the community commonly suffer from muscle spasms, knee and spinal pain, cardiac issues, and multiple joint problems. Economic hardships frequently delay timely medical attention for these workers.

The initiative was part of a commitment made by KAASH Foundation’s Founder-Trustee, Dr. Avkash Jadhav, who recently conducted a field survey of over 100 Kashmiri Khans between April 5 and April 21, 2026, during his Associate Fellowship at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Rashtrapati Niwas, Shimla. The survey findings were presented at a national seminar held at the institute on April 24, highlighting key challenges faced by the community.

The camp was presided over by Dr. Narendra Mahajan, former Associate Professor at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. The resource person, Dr. Mohammad Shahnawaz Hasan from IGMC’s Department of Community Medicine, educated attendees on nutrition, early identification of chronic illnesses, physiotherapy practices, and the importance of regular health check-ups.

He also spread awareness about government healthcare schemes, including Ayushman Bharat and Himcare, explaining how workers can access free or subsidised treatment.

Over 30 labourers attended the camp, benefiting from medical consultations and guidance. Dr. Mahajan also offered continued support through free consultations at his charity clinic near Kali Bari Temple and assistance with diagnostic services at IGMC.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Jadhav emphasised KAASH Foundation’s ongoing work in health and social welfare, particularly in Maharashtra.

The camp left a strong impact on the attendees. Mushtaq, a Kashmiri Khan porter, said the initiative gave them hope and a voice for their long-ignored struggles, adding that it was the first time their pain had been acknowledged.

Organisers said the camp successfully met its objective of providing healthcare access and raising awareness among one of Shimla’s most underserved communities.
