Kangra Tea Receives Geographical Indication (GI) Registration For European Markets

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that Kangra Tea has obtained protected Geographical Indication (GI) registration from the European Union (EU). This significant achievement allows for the sale of Kangra Tea in European countries and promises economic benefits for tea growers in the Kangra district and surrounding areas.

Recognition of Quality and Reputation:

  • GI Registration: The EU’s GI registration recognizes Kangra Tea for its quality, genuineness, and reputation in the European markets.
  • Boon for Sales: The registration opens new opportunities for Kangra Tea in European markets, benefitting tea growers in Palampur, Baijnath, Kangra, Dharamshala, Jogindernagar, and Bhattiyat areas.
  • Unique Taste and Medicinal Values: Kangra Tea is known for its distinctive taste, fragrance, and medicinal properties attributed to its abundant pyrazine contents, antioxidants, phenolic compounds, amino acids, and more.

Historical Significance and Market Potential:

  • Tea Export During the British Era: Kangra Tea was exported to European markets during the British era and received awards from Amsterdam and London markets between 1886 to 1895.
  • Overcoming Market Limitations: Without EU registration, selling Kangra Tea in European markets was not possible until now.
  • Growth Opportunities: With EU registration, the sale of Kangra Tea is expected to grow, opening up opportunities for tea growers in the state.

Preserving Traditional Products:

  • State Government’s Commitment: The present State Government is dedicated to preserving traditional products and supporting local artisans and weavers.
  • More than 400 Registered Products: More than 400 traditional products of the state, including Kullu shawl, Chamba Rumal, Kinnaur shawl, Kangra painting, Lahaul woolen socks, and gloves, have received GI status.
  • Future Considerations: GI registration for Himachali cap, Sirmauri Loeya, Mandi Sepubari, Chamba metal craft, Kinnauri apple, and Kinnauri ornaments is currently under consideration.

  • HIMCOSTE‘s Efforts: Himachal Pradesh Science Technology and Environment Council (HIMCOSTE) completed the registration process for Kangra Tea with the EU.
  • Contributions from Agriculture Department and Associations: The Agriculture Department, IHBT Palampur, and Kangra Valley Small Tea Planters Association received appreciation for their contributions to this achievement.
