To encourage the younger generation toward creativity and reconnect them with their cultural heritage, the Department of Language and Culture organized a storytelling session under its weekend series ‘Ek Samay Ki Baat Hai’ at the historic Gaiety Theatre Conference Hall on Saturday. The event aimed to introduce school students to the art of storytelling and the richness of local folklore. Noted writer Anurag Parashar engaged students from Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Lakkar Bazaar, and Government High School, Krishnanagar, through a set of short folktales titled Avsarvadita (Opportunism), Mohak Sanskar (Charming Traditions), and Vyavaharikta (Practical Wisdom).
Through these tales, Parashar encouraged students to avoid haste in their actions, value social virtues, respect elders, and develop good conduct. The third folktale emphasized the importance of choosing one’s field of interest wisely, making effective use of time, and striving for excellence to become an integral part of one’s chosen vocation.
He further urged students to read the works of India’s renowned storytellers and inspirational writers beyond their school curriculum, and to contribute their own writings and poems to annual school magazines under teachers’ guidance — a practice he said would mark a milestone in their creative journey.
The students actively interacted with Parashar, asking insightful questions about storytelling and writing — including how to begin writing and what qualities help one become a better author.
Adding a musical touch to the event, students of St. Edward’s School performed a musical band presentation, delighting the audience with a blend of folk, patriotic, and popular songs. Their lively performance entertained hundreds of locals and tourists alike and received great appreciation.
Sharing details, Director of the Department of Language and Culture, Rima Kashyap, informed that similar storytelling sessions are being organized every weekend in other districts, including Una, Solan and Bilaspur, to promote creativity and local culture among school students.
