Liberation of Buchenwald camp: Allied forces freed the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany during World War II, exposing the brutal atrocities committed by the Nazis.

MacArthur removed from command: During the Korean War, U.S. President Harry S. Truman dismissed General Douglas MacArthur due to differences over military strategy and policy.

Apollo 13 mission launched: NASA launched Apollo 13 on a lunar mission, which later turned into a historic emergency flight after an onboard explosion forced an aborted moon landing.

Kampala falls to liberation forces: Ugandan leader Idi Amin was overthrown as Tanzanian-backed forces captured the capital, ending his rule.
