In a step aligned with India’s clean energy and self-reliant manufacturing goals, the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has signed an agreement with Delhi-based NTF Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. to support the commercialisation of advanced Type-IV CNG cylinders.
The project, titled “Establishment of Manufacturing Facility for Commercialization of Type-IV CNG Cylinder,” aims to set up a modern production facility for indigenously developed composite cylinders using advanced technologies such as filament winding, blow moulding, and high-pressure testing systems.
These next-generation Type-IV composite cylinders are designed as a lighter and safer alternative to conventional steel cylinders, offering up to 75% weight reduction. This improves vehicle efficiency while significantly lowering carbon emissions, supporting India’s clean mobility transition.
Built with a corrosion-free polymer liner and reinforced with carbon fibre composites, the cylinders are engineered for higher durability, safety, and resistance to leakage, vibration, and extreme pressure conditions. The design is capable of withstanding burst pressures above 600 bar, well beyond regulatory requirements.
Developed indigenously by NTF Energy Solutions, the technology is aimed at strengthening India’s expanding CNG ecosystem and reducing dependence on imported advanced gas storage systems.
The upcoming facility will utilise locally sourced raw materials and advanced manufacturing processes to build a cost-effective and scalable production ecosystem. The project is expected to boost import substitution, promote technology self-reliance, and support the development of a strong clean-energy supply chain in India.
TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said the initiative is a significant step towards strengthening India’s clean mobility infrastructure and promoting indigenous manufacturing capabilities. He added that such technologies are crucial for advancing sustainable transport and energy security under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
NTF Energy Solutions MD Rajesh Kumar Pathak and Director Naman Jain expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the project will accelerate the commercial rollout of lightweight composite cylinder technology and contribute to India’s shift towards cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions.
