IGMC Shimla Pinkathon 2024: Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon Success

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, IGMC Shimla’s Department of Radiation Oncology hosted an impactful Pinkathon event, drawing over 200 participants to unite for breast cancer awareness. Held in Shimla’s picturesque settings, the Pinkathon commenced at the Cancer Hospital’s new building and moved through The Ridge and Chaura Maidan, reaching a turning point at the historic Indian Institute of Advanced Studies.

Participants wore pink, symbolizing solidarity in the fight against breast cancer, with many sporting pink T-shirts that showed their commitment to raising awareness and supporting breast cancer patients.

Top Performers Recognized in IGMC Shimla Pinkathon

The event included friendly competition, recognizing top performers:

  • First Place (₹10,000): Vipasha, a second-year student from RKMV Shimla
  • Second Place (₹5,000): Anamika, a plus-two student from GSSS Phagli, Shimla
  • Third Place (₹3,000): Suman, an M.Com student from RKMV Shimla

Additional recognition was given to several participants, including young Ira Gupta, a 10-year-old from Auckland House School, and cancer survivor Mrs. Suman Lata, both celebrated for their determination and spirit.

Key Messages on Early Detection of Breast Cancer at the Shimla Pinkathon

During the event, IGMC Shimla emphasized the urgent need for early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Awareness about early diagnosis, proactive check-ups, and timely medical intervention was a central message, aiming to address cultural and logistical challenges that sometimes delay treatment. Medical professionals encouraged women to prioritize health and emphasized that breast cancer is highly treatable when identified early.

Prominent Support for Breast Cancer Awareness in Himachal Pradesh

The Pinkathon was inaugurated by key IGMC figures, including Dr. Manish Gupta, Professor and Head of the Cancer Hospital, alongside Dr. Lalit Chanderkant, Dr. Siddharth Vats, and Dr. Poornima Thakur. The prize distribution ceremony was led by Prof. Kushala Pathania, Professor and Head of the Gynaecology Department. Participants were also awarded medals as a symbol of appreciation for their commitment to breast cancer awareness.
