A coordination meeting between the National Health Mission (NHM) and the Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (HPSACS) was convened to advance efforts toward the elimination of vertical transmission of HIV and syphilis in the state. The meeting was chaired by Pradeep Kumar, Mission Director, NHM.
The focus of the meeting was to enhance early detection and timely management of HIV and syphilis in pregnant women, with the goal of preventing transmission from mother to child. It was emphasized that all pregnant women must undergo routine screening, particularly at health institutions, and strategies should be devised to reach women who deliver at home.
Discussions also centered around intensifying information, education, and communication (IEC) initiatives to raise public awareness, reduce stigma, and promote timely testing and treatment.
Pradeep Kumar stated that strong interdepartmental coordination between NHM, HPSACS, and other related health departments is essential for achieving meaningful progress. “If we ensure universal screening and timely intervention, we can significantly reduce—and ultimately eliminate—vertical transmission,” he added.
Rajeev Kumar, Project Director of HPSACS, along with other officials, was present at the meeting and echoed the commitment to collaborative action.
This joint initiative marks a critical step in strengthening maternal and child healthcare systems and ensuring that no child is born with HIV or syphilis in Himachal Pradesh.
