CM Sukhu met Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu in New Delhi to fast-track critical aviation infrastructure and enhance air connectivity across Himachal Pradesh. Emphasizing tourism as a major economic driver, CM Sukhu prioritized the Kangra Airport expansion, confirming that land acquisition for the site is complete. Responding to the request, the Union Minister instructed officials to appoint a competent consultant and deliver a finalized techno-economic feasibility report within two months, while directing the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to conduct a realistic cost assessment.
To improve reach in difficult terrains and support emergency responses, the CM urged central aid for the state’s expanding heliport network. In response, the Union Government agreed to finance heliport construction under the UDAN scheme. Discussions also focused on stabilizing regular flights to Shimla Airport tailored to its runway capacity. Additionally, the Union Ministry accepted the state’s proposal to hand over security at Shimla Airport to the Himachal Pradesh Police, mirroring the existing setup at Kangra Airport.
