The renowned Himachal Pradesh Raj Bhavan, formerly known as ‘Barnes Court’, has commenced welcoming the general public today. Steeped in Tudor-style architecture, this grand structure stands as a testament to history. Originally occupied by British Commander-in-Chief Sir Edward Barnes in 1832, the building has witnessed significant events and was even the site of the historic ‘Shimla Agreement’ signing between India and Pakistan in 1972.

On the inaugural day of public access, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla hosted approximately 60 local schoolchildren from Portmore and Government School Chotta Shimla, offering them an enriching tour of the heritage building. The children engaged with Governor Shukla and Lady Governor Janaki Shukla and were treated to a documentary tracing the history of Raj Bhavan. This decision to open the doors aligns with President of India’s similar initiative for Rashtrapati Niwas, as Governor Shukla seeks to educate and captivate visitors with the building’s historical significance.

For those interested in visiting Raj Bhavan, arrangements can be made through the WhatsApp number 94183-16617, landline 0177-2624152, or email: visit.rajbhavan@gmail.com. The Governor, emphasizing the historical importance of Raj Bhavan, noted its transformation from an exclusive residence to a heritage attraction. Valuable pre-independence artifacts, including the iconic ‘Shimla Agreement’ table, are preserved within its walls, enriching the experience.

Governor Shukla expressed deep condolences for the loss of life and property due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh. He affirmed the collective effort to assist those affected by the monsoon’s impact, highlighting Raj Bhavan’s contribution of 11 relief material vehicles through the State Red Cross. With a commitment to keeping the central government informed about the state’s situation, the Governor is confident in receiving appropriate assistance to alleviate distress, following established practices.

Himachal Declared “Natural Calamity Affected Area”
