Supreme Court Allows Khair Tree Felling In Himachal Pradesh Forests

The Supreme Court of India has granted permission to axe khair trees on government forest land in 10 forest divisions of Himachal Pradesh, according to Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. The Court’s decision comes after a persuasive plea from the State Government, favoring the Forest Department. This move is expected to enhance forest management, generate revenue, and address the issue of decaying khair trees.

Felling of Khair Trees in Five Forest Divisions:

A working plan has been prepared for the felling of khair trees in five forest divisions, namely Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Nalagarh, and Kutlehar. The plan outlines the extraction of approximately 16,500 trees per annum in these divisions. Implementation of the felling process will commence shortly, enabling the forests to rejuvenate and contribute to the state’s revenue.

Preparation of Working Plan in Remaining Forest Divisions:

The Forest Department is currently working on the preparation of a working plan for the remaining five forest divisions, namely Nahan, Poanta Sahib, Dharamshala, Nurpur, and Dehra. Forest officers will initiate the process of inspecting the forests, conducting tree counts, and formulating a comprehensive working plan for these divisions.

Silviculture Felling for Forest Management and Rejuvenation:

The Chief Minister highlights that silviculture felling of khair trees offers numerous benefits for forest management and rejuvenation. By extracting the timber in a regulated manner, the process aids in preventing decay and improves overall forest health. Moreover, it presents an opportunity for the state exchequer to generate revenue, contributing to sustainable forest practices.

Background and Supreme Court’s Approval:

In 2018, the Supreme Court of India allowed the felling of khair trees on an experimental basis to evaluate the results of silviculture felling. Following the submission of findings by the Central Empowered Committee, the Court has now granted permission for the felling of khair trees. This decision reflects the Court’s confidence in the Forest Department’s expertise and aligns with the State Government’s commitment to prioritize the interests of the state.
